Uganda Car Import Regulations

Automobile importation is a need for Ugandans due to the country’s lack of indigenous manufacturing facilities. To accomplish so, the government has outlined a set of norms and regulations that must be strictly adhered to in order to legally import goods into Uganda.

As Uganda is a landlocked country bordered on all sides by land, it lacks its own port. To import a used cars for sale in Uganda, either the port of Mombasa in Kenya or Dar-Es-Salaam in Tanzania can be used, both of which are comparable in terms of vehicle import costs. The used automobile importer can either follow the procedures themselves or hire an agent to do so. Aside from the JEVIC inspection, which certifies that the vehicle is in perfect working order, there are paperwork and payments that must be submitted at the time of clearing. The roadworthiness inspection is essential since imported cars have no age limit, and it is carried out to prevent the admission of unroadworthy vehicles into the country.

Taxes

Certain taxation charges are imposed on the person who brings the vehicle into the country.

Import Duties

Duty on Imports: 15% of the dutiable value

VAT: 17% of the VAT value

2% of the Dutiable Value as an importation commission

4% of the dutiable value is subject to withholding tax.

Upon utility vehicles, there is a 10% exercise duty and duty reemissions in some situations.

Age Restriction

Unlike many other African countries, there are no age restrictions on vehicles imported into the country. The legitimacy of the documentation is sceptical to the transaction, however any car manufactured at any time can be imported into Uganda.

Adaptability on the road

There is no requirement for a roadworthiness inspection test prior to the issue of a valid certificate for importation. As a result, there is no age limit and no RWI, allowing individuals to simply import automobiles into the country.

  •  Bill of Lading
  •  Insurance Certificate
  • Tax Identification Number
  • Commercial Invoice
  •  Photocopy of Importer’s Identity Card and Passport

Shipment mechanism 

Cars are mainly imported into Uganda through the ports of Mombasa or Dar-es-Salaam. The country’s accessible trading routes have made it easier to import automobiles.
